Michael Beller: Fantasy baseball Waiver Wire -- Schierholtz, Beachy smart adds

Even if the Cubs trade Nate Schierholtz, he'll be a valuable fantasy commodity the rest of the year.

Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

Even though the Cubs have been the most aggressive seller this year and are not a serious threat to make the playoffs, they've played better than most people expected them to back in March. At 48-55, they're a near lock to significantly improve upon last years 61-101 record. Their run differential is -17, which ranks 18th in the league. They've gotten by mainly on the back of a rotation that has been a surprising strength, led by All-Star Travis Wood and Jeff Samardzija. The Cubs are loaded with talented hitting prospects, but the current offensive product at the major league level leaves plenty to be desired. The one consistent bat on the team might not be in Chicago much longer, but no matter where he is come August 1, he deserves attention. It's time Nate Schierholtz felt the love from the fantasy community.

MACK: Gear up for the stretch run with the latest fantasy baseball Weekly Planner

Schierholtz (available in 78 percent of Yahoo! leagues, 55 percent of CBS leagues and 73 percent of ESPN leagues) came to the Cubs this offseason on an affordable three-year deal, and was slated to be part of a lefty/righty platoon in right field with Scott Hairston (who was dealt to the Nationals earlier this month). Schierholtz's struggles against left-handed pitching haven't waned (he's hitting .188/.325/.219 against southpaws), but he has raked against righties, giving him a full-season slash of .281/.340/.536 with 14 homers through 307 plate appearances. He has always hit righties well, which makes him an ideal platoon player, but he has taken it up a notch this season, specifically in the power department. His 15.9 HR/FB ratio would be by far a career high. A number of teams reportedly have interest in him, most notably the Pirates. Wrigley Field has played as a hitter's paradise this season, but we shouldn't expect any significant drop-off in production if Schierholtz gets traded. He can be added in most mixed leagues.

And now, for the rest of this week's Waiver Wire goodness:

? Brandon Beachy, Braves (56, 21, 55): Beachy will make his season debut tonight against the Rockies. He hasn't pitched in a major league game since an elbow injury and subsequent Tommy John surgery ended his 2012 season, but he had been one of the hottest starters over the previous season-and-a-half. We've seen what he can do when healthy. This is a guy who struck out 169 batters in 141.2 innings in 2011, then posted an ERA of 2.00 in 13 starts last season. His velocity fell off a full mile per hour between 2011-12, but that likely had something to do with his elbow. He has sailed through his rehab starts without issue, always the most important factor for any player returning from injury. He should be universally owned.

? Junior Lake, Cubs (69, 52, 45): Lake gets overlooked in the Cubs farm system, and for good reason. The Cubs boast four top-50 prospects, and Lake doesn't crack the top 100. He did have a strong year at Triple-A Iowa, hitting .295/.341/.462 with four homers and 14 steals and earning a call to the majors. Since the promotion, he has done his best Yasiel Puig impression, hitting .385/.415/.615 with two homers. Over his entire minor league career, Lake never projected as an All-Star player, so it would be silly for us to expect that to change based on a two-week sample. He is, however, very athletic, and gives Dale Sveum a ton of roster flexibility. With Alfonso Soriano now in the Bronx, Lake will be in the lineup most days. He's worth a shot in deeper mixed leagues, especially since he's shortstop eligible on CBS and ESPN.

? Carlos Quentin, Padres (67, 39, 29): I started writing this weekly column last season, and I feel like as long as I write it and Quentin is in the league, he'll make an appearance at some point during the season. He's up to his usual tricks this year, hitting 278/.366/.500 with 13 homers in 314 plate appearances. After a slow start, he turned it on once summer descended on the country, slashing .366/.451/.577 in June and .294/.351/.541 thus far in July. He's drawing interest on the trade market, and unlike with Schierholtz leaving Wrigley, a trade almost anywhere away from Petco Park would be a good thing for Quentin.

? Tyler Chatwood, Rockies (80, 57, 77): Chatwood's season defies description in much the same way Jeff Locke's does, but Chatwood hasn't gotten near the level of fantasy attention the Pittsburgh righty has garnered. In 14 starts, Chatwood is 7-3 with a 2.48 ERA and 3.14 FIP. He only gets 6.37 strikeouts per nine innings, so he's not going to help much in that department. Despite the low number of strikeouts, though, he gets by primarily by keeping the ball in the ballpark; he has surrendered just three homers in 81 innings. His low strikeout total limits his upside for fantasy purposes, but he's still worth looking at in most mixed leagues.

The droppables

? Josh Johnson, Blue Jays: Of all the culprits in Toronto's disappointing season, Johnson might top the list. His velocity is fine and he's still striking guys out, but the results are consistently terrible. After allowing seven runs to the Astros Saturday, he has a 6.08 ERA and 4.60 FIP. The strikeouts aren't worth this headache. You should feel OK letting him go.

? Miguel Montero, Diamondbacks: For one reason or another, Montero can't seem to hit fly balls with any consistency this year. That's an awfully bad sign for a power hitter, and it has manifested itself in a .230/.319/.348 slash line. In reality, his power hasn't fallen off at all. His HR/FB ratio is 11.8 percent this year, a slight uptick from last year's 11.6 percent. However, his fly-ball rate is just 30.8 percent. Last year, it was 36 percent. At this point, it's hard to believe that he'll turn it around in 2013.

Michael Chiesa gets first loss by tapping just before the round ended at UFC on Fox 8

Going into his fight with Jorge Masvidal at UFC on Fox 8, "The Ultimate Fighter" winner Michael Chiesa was undefeated. Now, he has a loss on his record that he probably will think about for the rest of his career. Masvidal won with a D'arce choke at 4:59 in the second round.

Fighting in his home state of Washington, Chiesa started the fight well. In the first round, Chiesa knocked Masvidal to the ground, and looked close to finishing the fight first with strikes, and then with a choke. Masvidal recovered, returned to his feet, and managed a few shots of his own.

Later in the second round, Masvidal rolled Chiesa into a D'Arce position just before the clapper that announces 10 seconds left in the round sounded. Masvidal squeezed, and Chiesa tapped right before the horn sounded to end the second round. The fight was stopped, and Masvidal earned the win at 4:59 in the second round.

Chiesa stormed out of the cage as Masvidal celebrated his win. There was bad blood between the two before the fight as Masvidal complained about Chiesa's beard and Chiesa said he wasn't happy with Masvidal's smack talk. Between the bad blood, and Chiesa tapping with barely any time on the clock, he will want that fight back.

Campbell Hill Fire Department Runs Off Community Support

CAMPBELL HILL -- Many rural communities in our region depend on fundraising to persevere. In a Jackson County, one village's fire department has been self-funded for decades.

The Campbell Hill Picnic and Homecoming is hosting its annual fundraising event that has gone on for more than 50 years.

Picnic Chairman Charlie Hooks says all the money raised over the weekend is split between the American Legion and the volunteer fire department.

"Fundraising for the fire department and what they do and for equipment, and everything the legion does for the veterans and so forth and the schools," he says.

Unlike many fire departments, Campbell Hill is not run by the village, it's supported by the community.

"We get fire dues from each household. It's $30 a year," says Campbell Hill firefighter Dustin Vanover. "And then we have our picnics and fish fry and chicken fry."

Vanover says the department relies solely on fire dues, state grants, and fundraisers like this.

"It's our biggest fundraiser," he explains. "It helps us pay for our worker's comp, our insurance on our trucks, equipment, helps pay to keep everything modernized, so we can help somebody the best we can when we need to be."

Organizers say families come from all over to enjoy what the weekend has to offer. The three-day event is expected to generate thousands of dollars, while bringing Campbell Hill and it's surrounding communities together.

"Everything goes back to the community, but it takes the community to make this work," insisted Hooks.

Vanover adds, "Just something for all the firemen to get together and have a good time, you know? Most of the time it ain't good when we go somewhere, so we want to be able to get together and laugh and have a good time."

The festivities continue Sunday with a parade at 2 p.m., followed by a variety show and dance in the evening.

USS Pueblo: North Korea expected to unveil US captured spy ship this week

USS?Pueblo, a spy ship seized off North Korea's east coast in the late 1960s, is expected to be unveiled this week as the centerpiece of a renovated war museum?to commemorate what North Korea calls 'Victory Day.'

If there was ever any doubt about what happened to the only U.S. Navy ship that is being held by a foreign government, North Korea has cleared it up. It's in Pyongyang. And it looks like it's here to stay.

With a fresh coat of paint and a new home along the Pothong River, the?USS?Pueblo, a spy ship seized off North Korea's east coast in the late 1960s, is expected to be unveiled this week as the centerpiece of a renovated war museum to commemorate what North Korea calls "Victory Day," the 60th anniversary this Saturday of the signing of the armistice that ended hostilities in the Korean War.

The ship is North Korea's greatest Cold War prize. Its government hopes the?Pueblo?will serve as a potent symbol of how the country has stood up to the great power of the United States, once in an all-out ground war and now with its push to develop the nuclear weapons and sophisticated missiles it needs to threaten the U.S. mainland.

Many of the crew who served on the vessel, then spent 11 months in captivity in North Korea, want to bring the?Pueblo?home. Throughout its history, they argue, the Navy's motto has been "don't give up the ship." ThePueblo, in fact, is still listed as a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel, the only one being held by a foreign nation.

But with relations generally fluctuating in a narrow band between bad to dangerously bad, the United States has made little effort to get it back. At times, outsiders weren't even sure where North Korea was keeping the ship or what it planned to do with it.

Requests for interviews with the captain of one of the North Korean ships involved in the attack were denied, and officials here have been tight lipped about their plans before the formal unveiling.

The?Pueblo?incident is a painful reminder of miscalculation and confusion, as well as the unresolved hostilities that continue to keep the two countries in what seems to be a permanent state of distrust and preparation for another clash, despite the truce that ended the 1950-1953 war.

Already more than 40 years old and only lightly armed so it wouldn't look conspicuous or threatening as it carried out its intelligence missions, the?USS?Pueblo?was attacked and easily captured on Jan. 23, 1968.

Surrounded by a half dozen enemy ships with MiG fighter jets providing air cover, the crew was unable to put up much of a fight. It scrambled to destroy intelligence materials, but soon discovered it wasn't well prepared for even that.

A shredder aboard the?Pueblo?quickly became jammed with the piles of papers anxious crew members shoved into it. They tried burning the documents in waste baskets, but smoke quickly filled the cabins. And there were not enough weighted bags to toss all the secret material overboard.

One U.S. sailor was killed when the ship was strafed by machine gun fire and boarded. The remaining 82, including three injured, were taken prisoner. The North Koreans sailed the?Pueblo?to the port of Wonsan.

For the survivors, that's when the real ordeal began.

"I got shot up in the original capture, so we were taken by bus and then train for an all-night journey to Pyongyang in North Korea, and then they put us in a place we called the barn," said Robert Chicca of Bonita, Calif., a Marine Corps sergeant who served as a Korean linguist on the?Pueblo. "We had fried turnips for breakfast, turnip soup for lunch, and fried turnips for dinner. ... There was never enough to eat, and personally I lost about 60 pounds over there."

Although the ship was conducting intelligence operations, crew members say that most of them had little useful information for the North Koreans. That, according to the crew, didn't stop them from being beaten severely during interrogations.

"The Koreans basically told us, they put stuff in front of us, they said you were here, you were spying, you will be shot as spies," said Earl Phares from Ontario, Calif., who was cleaning up after the noon meal in the galley when the attack began. "Everybody got the same amount of beatings in the beginning."

North Korea said the ship had entered its territorial waters, though the U.S. maintained it was in international waters 15 miles off the nearest land.

The incident quickly escalated. The U.S., already deeply embroiled in the Vietnam War, sent several aircraft carriers to the Sea of Japan and demanded the captives be released. Just days before the attack, North Korean commandos had launched an assassination attempt on South Korea's President Park Chung-hee at his residence.

North Korea responded by putting members of the crew before cameras to confess publicly. The crew members planted defiant codes into forced letters of confession and extended their middle fingers in images sent around the world. That led to further beatings when the North Koreans figured out the gesture's meaning.

On Dec. 21, 1968, Maj. Gen. Gilbert H. Woodward, the chief U.S. negotiator, signed a statement acknowledging that the?Pueblo?had "illegally intruded into the territorial waters of North Korea" and apologizing for "the grave acts committed by the U.S. ship against" North Korea. Both before and after, he read into the record a statement disavowing the confession.

The hostages were released across the Demilitarized Zone that divides the two Koreas two days before Christmas ? 335 days after their capture.

The Navy considered a court-martial for the ship's captain, Cmdr. Lloyd M. "Pete" Bucher, for letting thePueblo?fall into enemy hands without firing a shot and for failing to destroy much of the ship's classified material. But he was never brought to trial. John H. Chafee, secretary of the Navy at the time, said Bucher and the other crew members "had suffered enough."

To this day, members of the?Pueblo?crew say Bucher made the right decision, though years later his second-in-command publicly questioned Bucher's decisions not to fight.

"It would have been nice to take out some of the guys, some of them, and maybe go down fighting, but it would have been total suicide," said Phares. "We never thought anything would happen, and we weren't supposed to create an international incident."

In 2002, former U.S. Ambassador to South Korea Donald P. Gregg said a North Korean foreign ministry official hinted at a deal to return the?Pueblo. But when he later visited Pyongyang, he said he was told the climate had changed and a return was no longer an option.

In January the next year, Colorado Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell reintroduced a resolution in Congress asking North Korea to return the ship. There has been no progress since, however, at least none that has been made public.

"The ship was named after?Pueblo, Colorado, and they would have loved to have the ship back," Chicca said. "It's very disappointing to have it still there, and still being used as anti-American propaganda."

The planned display of the ship by North Korea hangs over the heads of the crew members who have long campaigned for its return.

"I'll never give up, but I don't think it's ever coming back," Phares said. "It's just unfortunate that we got put in that situation, and that the top brass blamed us, or blamed Bucher, for everything."

Saints' Payton is even ready to call plays again

METAIRIE, La. (AP) ? Sean Payton took a seat in front of a microphone and paused while a swarm of photographers converged, the sound of the shutters fluttering for several seconds.

"Are we done?" he asked with an impatient stare, largely silencing the cameras.

On the eve of his first training camp in two years, the New Orleans Saints' coach was ready to talk football.

And after an unwanted year away because of his bounty suspension, Payton also appears ready to get back to a particular aspect of coaching in which he made his name: calling offensive plays.

Payton relinquished play-calling duties when he broke his leg in the sixth game of the 2011 season. Offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael assumed that role for the rest of 2011 and all of 2012.

Payton said Carmichael was "outstanding" as a play-caller. Indeed, with Carmichael calling plays for the last 10-plus games of 2011, Drew Brees and the offense set NFL records, including yards passing for a quarterback at 5,476 and total net yards at 7,474.

Even last season, when the Saints languished to a 7-9 season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008, the offense was second in the NFL in yards per game at nearly 411.

But in his year away from coaching, Payton had a chance to reflect on some of the things he missed most, and play-calling was one of them.

"It's something I enjoy doing," Payton said. "It's just a matter of getting back up to speed and getting familiar with all the elements of it."

Brees has had a tight relationship with Carmichael ever since the two were together in San Diego. They've been together a decade now and Brees said he would have complete faith in Carmichael or Payton as play-callers.

Still, Brees appreciated the significance of Payton's decision to take a more hands-on approach in a number of areas after watching from afar as the club struggled in his absence.

"I thought Pete Carmichael did a phenomenal job," Brees said, but added, "I love the fact that Sean is back and he's taking the reins and he's going to be the voice in my ear."

For general manager Mickey Loomis, seeing Payton and Brees working closely again "just feels normal, and it feels good."

"It's probably a little fresher excitement than it would be ordinarily because of what happened a year ago," Loomis added. "We are all a little bit more focused than we would have been otherwise."

Brees said Payton also was more creative in his approach to the conditioning test players took on reporting day. He said it resembled more of the CrossFit routine the 49-year-old Payton himself began during his time away, resulting in a coach that looks his most svelte since arriving in the Big Easy in 2006.

Brees said that while the conditioning test previously consisted mostly of wind sprints, this year it was a combination of running, weight training and body-weight exercises such as pushups, which left players feeling as if they'd been through "a 10-minute wrestling match."

"It was challenging for all," Brees said. "It becomes very evident as to who was doing a great job staying in shape."

Brees is heading into his 13th NFL season, having been through his last seven seasons in New Orleans without a major injury. How healthy he stays this year could depend on how good the Saints' new left tackle is.

Payton made it sound like he is not yet settled on a starter to replace Jermon Bushrod, a four-year starter who left in free agency for Chicago. The front-runner appears to be 2010 second-round draft choice Charles Brown, with free-agent pickup Jason Smith and third-round draft choice Terron Armstead also in the mix.

"Each player has certain strengths," Payton said, adding that he will need to see how each handles more full-contact practices and preseason games. "I'm anxious to see how those guys play."

Brees said he felt Brown performed well when filling in last season for Zach Strief at right tackle, but Payton has expressed concerns about Brown's recurring injuries.

"Hopefully his health can be something that doesn't affect how he plays," Payton said. "This is a big season for him and an important training camp, and I'm looking forward to seeing how he responds."

Meanwhile, Payton said he expects five players to open camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, though all except outside linebacker Victor Butler, who tore knee ligaments during offseason training, have injuries which could heal before the regular season.

The other four are safety Roman Harper (sports hernia), cornerback Patrick Robinson (knee), receiver Marques Colston (foot) and receiver Kenny Stills (wrist). Payton said Robinson will be evaluated on a weekly basis, while Harper, Stills and Colston will be monitored day-by-day.

Players who remain on the PUP list at the start of the regular season must sit out six weeks before playing.

Group Formed to Replicate 'Surfing Madonna' Art On California's Coastline

The group hopes to raise money for the art installations across the state. The first major fundraising event will be The Surfing Madonna Save The Ocean 5-10K Beach Run, which will take place in Encinitas on Nov. 16.

When artist Mark Peterson's mosaic "Surfing Madonna" was stealthily installed under an?Encinitas overpass in 2011, it sparked much debate. Many residents thought it fun,?creative and a great way to remind people to "Save the Oceans."

Others thought it an eyesore, including many city officials, who removed the mosaic thereafter, after a drawn out back and forth.?

Now, the visage of?Our Lady of Guadalupe ?catching waves is in the news again, as a nonprofit group ? led by Patterson and others ? has formed with the idea of replicating Patterson's work and spreading the message of awareness?to?problem's the world's oceans face, including pollution and trash disposal.

According to U-T San Diego,??the?Surfing Madonna Oceans Project will enable artists to create their own versions of his piece. It is hoped that these works will be displayed up and down the California coast.?

?We want to start waking people up to the issues facing the world?s oceans,? Patterson told the newspaper.

The first artist who will interpret "Surfing Madonna" is Susanna Holt, who specializes in bronze sculptures. It is hoped that her work will be installed on private land near Mavericks Beach or Ghost Tree Beach in Pebble Beach, according to U-T San Diego.?

Patterson's original now hangs on Coast Highway in Leucadia, between Cafe Ipe and Surfy Surfy.?

The group endeavors to raise money for the art installations across the state. The first major fundraising event will be?The Surfing Madonna Save The Ocean 5-10K Beach Run, which will take place in Encinitas?on Nov. 16.

Fox Sports Live talent announced

Written by Joe Lucia on .

The on-air talent for Fox Sports Live has been announced, and many of the names are ones we're familiar with: Jay Onrait, Dan O'Toole, Charissa Thompson, Andy Roddick, Gary Payton, Donovan McNabb, and Ephraim Salaam.

The show, which will serve as Fox Sports 1's flagship program, will be anchored by Onrait and O'Toole, formerly of TSN. We've known that they'd be the main anchors for the program for awhile, so all today did was really confirm their role with the network. The anchors will receive breaking news and updates from Don Bell and Ryan Field, while Julie Stewart-Binks and Molly McGrath will also serve as correspondents.

The next name in the pecking order is former SportsNation host Thompson, who will be the primary host of Fox Sports Live's opinion and analysis segments. I'm sure we're all cringing at the prospect of "opinion" segments, but as long as there aren't contrived debate segments, we should be OK (hopefully). Roddick's hiring was announced in May, and he's one of four former athletes on the show's panel. Payton's TV experience is limited, but he has hosted a weekly Bay Area radio show and a weekly TSN show in Canada.

McNabb joins Fox Sports Live after a brief stint with NFL Network, and he had some moments on television and on Twitter that made us wince. It'll be interesting to see what happens with his show on NBC Sports Radio, which isn't even four months old yet. Finally, there's Salaam, whose only media experience I can really find is a recurring role on Robert Mays' Grantland podcast.

On one hand, it's nice to see Fox going with a whole batch of new faces on their opinion panel to at least give us a bit of a fresh perspective as opposed to the usual overplayed opinions from the same faces you've seen time and time again. You can't build up new stars without giving new faces a chance. On the other hand, there's a pretty big opportunity for things to fall apart if the new names negatively impair the solid backbone of the show provided by Onrait, O'Toole, and Thompson. But remember, even the best athletes turned analysts were once in the same position. For every Jerry Rice that fades away quickly, there's a Jay Bilas who becomes a superstar in the broadcasting world

Dr Abu Sakara

Dr Foster Abu Sakara, the 2012 presidential candidate of the Convention People?s Party (CPP), has advised the electorate to be careful with the choices they make because they are accountable to the society.

Speaking at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences forum on the topic ?Political Accountability and Good Governance,? Dr Sakara said politicians entered into offices through the electorate and it was important they (electorate) demanded accountability from them as well.

?The electorate are accountable to the society and should be blamed if they make the wrong choice for the country,? he said.

He said Ghana was endowed with rich natural mineral resources such gold, diamond, oil, cocoa, manganese and bauxite, a prospect that surpassed other countries on the African continent.

Dr Sakara said it was therefore imperative for any leader voted into office to use the nation?s resources for development since there was no basis to fail.

?Any politician, who fails to use the rich natural resources available for the development of the country, should be held accountable,? he added.

He also called for the passage of the Right to Information Bill to enable the public to have access to any information pertaining to the governance of the country.

Mr Vitus Azeem, Executive Director, Ghana Integrity Initiative, said lack of political accountability and weak governance fueled corruption, adding that nepotism, lobbying and extortion could also cause serious harm to the national economy.

He said professional groups such as accountants, lawyers, journalists and other civil society organisations must see themselves as playing a watchdog role and providing a sustained and credible leadership in demand for political accountability and good governance.

Washington Post reveals new PRISM slides, offers greater clarity into the US surveillance operation

PRISM: The surveillance story that started with four leaked slides from the Washington Post, today gets a bit clearer. The publication has revealed four more annotated slides about the once-secret NSA operation, along with detailing the various levels of scrutiny from the FBI and NSA that happen before, during and after approved wiretaps take place. It seems that many of the measures make sure the warrantless data mining of US citizens occurs to the smallest extent possible and that FISA rules are followed -- still unsettling, nonetheless.

Detailing the process further, NSA analysts perform checks with supervisors to be certain intended targets are foreign nationals who aren't on US soil; approval is provided by way of "51-percent confidence" in assessments. During a "tasking process" search terms are entered, dubbed "selectors," which can tap into FBI gear installed within the private properties of participating companies -- so much for those denials. For live communications, this data goes straight to the NSA's PRINTAURA filtering system, while both the FBI and NSA scan pre-recorded data independently. Notably, live surveillance is indeed possible for the likes of text, voice and and instant message-based conversations, according to a slide that details how cases are notated. It's also worth mentioning that much of the collected metadata comes from programs outside of PRISM, as WP points out.

PRINTAURA is an overall filter for others, like NUCLEON for voice communications and MAINWAY for records of phone calls. Another two layers beyond that, called CONVEYANCE and FALLOUT, provide further filtering. Again, all of these checks apparently fine-tune results and help make sure they don't match up with US citizens. Results that return info about those in the US get scrapped, while those that have info about foreign targets mixed with US citizens get stored for up to five years. A total number of 117,675 active targets were listed as of April 5th, but the paper notes this doesn't reflect the amount of data that may also have been collected on American citizens. If you haven't already, now might be a great time to catch up on this whole PRISM fiasco to learn about how it might affect you. You'll find all the new slides and more detailed analysis at the source links.
