About a year ago I made the bewildered and semi-conscious decision to apply to Concordia?s Creative Writing program. I knew it was competitive. I was facing a huge failure on my part ? I had that permanent bitter savour in my mouth and the cooling fall weather was poisoned by my anger. Fall was my favourite time of the year, but not last year.
In one of my first classes a professor asked her students what they were hoping to learn as writers in the program. What were their expectations of working as a writer? Did they have the discipline?
I remember arrogantly scoffing within the safe confines of my thoughts that I wasn?t going to be a writer. I was still operating on the assumption of the temporary. I was so convinced that my situation wasn?t real, even the mention that I was striving to be a writer seemed ludicrous. Maybe I thought I was better than being an artist. Maybe I thought I was better than being an arts student. I?d been studying math and physics with the intention of becoming a scientist, or an engineer, for the better part of my life. Art was anathema. I would not be a painter, a guitarist, or a writer. Looking back, I sometimes wonder if I left one fantasy for another, a sort of false awakening where I realise I?m still in some sort of dream where the walls and confines of my self can shift quite easily.
I am now an arts student, almost despite myself. I have opinions in class, and have to do away with the idea that there is a right answer.?Since beginning my?camino at Concordia, and permanently turning a page away from the mess of the before, I?ve sometimes felt very alienated by my new path. As arrogant as I may have been, snarking at the thought of becoming an artist, I also ultimately want to connect very much. I want to write every day. I am yearning for that discipline and also for that frenzy that accompanies creation, drafting, editing, correcting, formulating, gluing, collaging, destroying. I want to move beyond ? I know how to order pizza in three languages (French being my maternal language, and Spanish my other language) but I do not feel limitless (weightless, effortless) in any of my tongues.
In one of the more teeth clenching events of my life in the last year, yesterday I had to sit in a class and write a coherent in-class essay for the first time since I left high school.
Yesterday turns out to have been more significant than just that.
I met and more importantly heard a poet called Derek Beaulieu yesterday.
That coincidental for-university-credit attendance to his Concordia Writer?s Read conference was game changing. He read exerts of his works, especially those from his published ?seen of the crime? (a collection of essays on conceptual writing) and described his teaching style. He is a creative writing professor at Calgary University and Mount Royal university. He?s also the dude in charge of NoPress.
These are my notes of thoughts and observations made during the conference. They are synthesized in a manner that more or less makes sense. Hopefully I?ll be able to transfer to you some of the sensations I encountered while listening to Derek Beaulieu speak.
As a teacher of creative writing (remember: creative writing is to literature what playing the violin is to studying music theory, sort of) Derek Beaulieu assigns his students a series of Impossible Assignments. For instance, one of his students apparently wanted to write nothing but stories about orcs.
?An orc, for the uninitiated.?
Derek Beaulieu?s response to his student is: Why not. Go for it. Good luck to you. Write the most interesting story about orcs you can muster. But do it using nothing but punctuation marks.
This is what preoccupies Derek Beaulieu. Conceptual writing* prefers not to engage with the traditional expectations given to literature and writing. Why use words when it is so much more difficult to use periods and commas and parentheses to express yourself? Have you ever imagined telling a story set in the Spaghetti Wild West using nothing but the passive voice? Have you ever tried describing what it?s like to read in a dream? In dreams books are merely the shelves of their bookness, blurred beyond the thresholds of readability. ?Conceptual writing pushes and pushes as we grope in a sea of abstraction for the boundaries of what on earth writing is.
Clearly, we are going nowhere. We are not creating but selecting. There is no originality, we already have at our fingertips (in our blurry, blurry dreams) the perfect library. Does this crush us or liberate us? The gall to call ourselves writers and especially poets! Are you a writer when you are not writing at all? Can?not writing?be seen as a literary act? In a most Aesthetic observation, is the writer?s life part of the oeuvre???Collage: the only thing at stake is obsolescence. If you don?t share,?if you don?t steal, you stagnate. We scorn poets for sharing. Being bullied in high school is not just cause for publication ? don?t ring a bell, wring a neck ? poetry has more to learn from archeology and engineering and medicine and every other subject in existence than it does to learn from poetry. Poets don?t know anything, that?s why they are poets. Distilled, I wonder if this is a nod to that inner curiosity that drives the mind. Our eyesight exists to be overcome. Matter is here to test us?. What does poetry do? What is the post modernist offering of poetry?
Watching Derek Beaulieu perform and read and laugh (he is a fairly charming persona at the podium, warm and entertaining) gave me the distinct impression that
Academia: nonsense.
If poetry has to learn from graphic design and advertisements, do we not run the risk of creating traffic signs all over again? If writing is indeed constructed one letter at a time than perhaps it makes sense (maybe it really doesn?t) to say that poetry is the business slogan for impossible and imaginary business models.
And here we touch a subject that hit me upside the head yesterday. This is why I even decided to write today. ?Poets chose to be poets because they do not have the drive to be anything else.? muses Derek Beaulieu, and of the poet?s subject matter ?The natural is obvious and to be obvious is to be inartistic.? He goes on to speak of collage, which I touched on above, and he went further.?In an almost decadent way, Derek Beaulieu offers us these juicy bits. Poetry should be disastrous and criminal and perverse. Poetry should be an affront to poetry. Writing doesn?t always know that it is writing and poetry should be the same. The focus should not be ?what does poetry do? but ?is that even poetry?? ? that is the questions that pushes our understanding, and in understanding there is living. Get in the way of your own poetry. How do you move away from your own clich?s and pry apart the elements that form associations and categorizations in your mind? (There are fascinating bits of cognitive psychology I would love to throw in here, but I would need the Violinist to help but they are currently working on a presentation and I don?t want to derail them. Another day.)
Build something that is yours.
This is the part that I really love, the part of the talk that embraces my ?Fuck This Shit? mentality tattooed under my skin. One should not be a poet creator of poetry: one should be a creator of their own poetry: one should be their own poet. A poet has no audience. Canada has a population of?34,482,779 (folks, that?s less than the state of California). If your average successful poetry collection has a print run of 500 volumes, then statistically the readership of a poet is 0%. There is no practical statistical relevance to the poet or the poem, even inside circles of Academia. I consider my previous torn anxiety at the mention of my desire to become a writer. There is no such thing, practically, as a poet. Derek Beaulieu facetiously apologized to a friend of mine in the room during Q&A, asking him if he had any hobbies he could turn to instead of studying poetry. We must be crazy, here, to embrace creative writing and to embrace abstraction and conceptualism and the intangible. Statistically, we have no place outside our own brains. A writer is in the eye of the beholder. We live in a society that has a place for a JK Rowling and a Stephen King but not the myriad of students who graduate from ?Creative Writing programs across North America. We are similar to the classical musicians finding their funding and opportunities shrinking, or to the fine artists ?having to turn to graphic design or interior decorating to make a living.
So there is no place for the poet.?Embrace that zero. Dance like you are all alone. Don?t be a poet, be your poetry. There is no censorship. There is no limit but your own mind.?Within our lack of a box or scaffold is the possibility for pure, total invention.

So a few weeks ago I was browsing pinterest and came across these adorable decoupaged Christmas tree ornaments. This is definitely a project right up my alley and I decided to try it early on pumpkins!

So I went to my local Michaels and picked up a variety of pumpkins. I definitely recommend the white ones because you can have a few missing spots and they won?t show up. I?m not sure how the orange pumpkins do yet, but I?ll find out tomorrow!
This is what the final product looks like. I love the scrappiness of it, and its perfect for my more earthy halloween decor.
So the first step is to get your paper. I just grabbed a book that I was planning on donating and cut out a handful of sheets. For the big pumpkin I used about 20 sheets, for the small pumpkin about 4.? I cut the sheets out of the book and then trimmed the margins.
Then I cut vertical strips of varied widths.
Then I cut some of those into shorter strips.
Once I had everything cut and ready to go, I grabbed my Mod Podge and a small sponge brush and went at it.
I recommend using more glue than less. Glue before you put a strip down and then after the strip is on. In my opinion you can?t have too much glue.
This is pretty much how my progress went. I worked on the pumpkin about a quarter at a time and then finished up the bottom quarter after I went all the way around.
I recommend doing it this way because you can keep the smaller area that you?re working on wet and it makes the whole process easier.? Here?s the final big pumpkin again:
I also decoupaged a small pumpkin. This one was much harder because of all the small heavy creases. I used 3/8? x 2? strips on this one so it used probably just as many strips as the big pumpkin? just much smaller and harder to handle strips!
I also added a dusting of clear glitter on this one:
And here is the final product mixed with that gilded pumpkin!
I?ve got to do a few more of these (maybe go pick up another big pumpkin), and then I?ll be ready to do all my Halloween decor!

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? The point of no return: In astronomy, it's known as a black hole -- a region in space where the pull of gravity is so strong that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes that can be billions of times more massive than our sun may reside at the heart of most galaxies. Such supermassive black holes are so powerful that activity at their boundaries can ripple throughout their host galaxies.
Now, an international team, led by researchers at MIT's Haystack Observatory, has for the first time measured the radius of a black hole at the center of a distant galaxy -- the closest distance at which matter can approach before being irretrievably pulled into the black hole.
The scientists linked together radio dishes in Hawaii, Arizona and California to create a telescope array called the "Event Horizon Telescope" (EHT) that can see details 2,000 times finer than what's visible to the Hubble Space Telescope. These radio dishes were trained on M87, a galaxy some 50 million light years from the Milky Way. M87 harbors a black hole 6 billion times more massive than our sun; using this array, the team observed the glow of matter near the edge of this black hole -- a region known as the "event horizon."
"Once objects fall through the event horizon, they're lost forever," says Shep Doeleman, assistant director at the MIT Haystack Observatory and research associate at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. "It's an exit door from our universe. You walk through that door, you're not coming back."
Doeleman and his colleagues have published the results of their study this week in the journal Science.
Jets at the edge of a black hole
Supermassive black holes are the most extreme objects predicted by Albert Einstein's theory of gravity -- where, according to Doeleman, "gravity completely goes haywire and crushes an enormous mass into an incredibly close space." At the edge of a black hole, the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls in everything from its surroundings. However, not everything can cross the event horizon to squeeze into a black hole. The result is a "cosmic traffic jam" in which gas and dust build up, creating a flat pancake of matter known as an accretion disk. This disk of matter orbits the black hole at nearly the speed of light, feeding the black hole a steady diet of superheated material. Over time, this disk can cause the black hole to spin in the same direction as the orbiting material.
Caught up in this spiraling flow are magnetic fields, which accelerate hot material along powerful beams above the accretion disk The resulting high-speed jet, launched by the black hole and the disk, shoots out across the galaxy, extending for hundreds of thousands of light-years. These jets can influence many galactic processes, including how fast stars form. 'Is Einstein right?'
A jet's trajectory may help scientists understand the dynamics of black holes in the region where their gravity is the dominant force. Doeleman says such an extreme environment is perfect for confirming Einstein's theory of general relativity -- today's definitive description of gravitation.
"Einstein's theories have been verified in low-gravitational field cases, like on Earth or in the solar system," Doeleman says. "But they have not been verified precisely in the only place in the universe where Einstein's theories might break down -- which is right at the edge of a black hole."
According to Einstein's theory, a black hole's mass and its spin determine how closely material can orbit before becoming unstable and falling in toward the event horizon. Because M87's jet is magnetically launched from this smallest orbit, astronomers can estimate the black hole's spin through careful measurement of the jet's size as it leaves the black hole. Until now, no telescope has had the magnifying power required for this kind of observation.
"We are now in a position to ask the question, 'Is Einstein right?'" Doeleman says. "We can identify features and signatures predicted by his theories, in this very strong gravitational field."
The team used a technique called Very Long Baseline Interferometry, or VLBI, which links data from radio dishes located thousands of miles apart. Signals from the various dishes, taken together, create a "virtual telescope" with the resolving power of a single telescope as big as the space between the disparate dishes. The technique enables scientists to view extremely precise details in faraway galaxies.
Using the technique, Doeleman and his team measured the innermost orbit of the accretion disk to be only 5.5 times the size of the black hole event horizon. According to the laws of physics, this size suggests that the accretion disk is spinning in the same direction as the black hole -- the first direct observation to confirm theories of how black holes power jets from the centers of galaxies.
The team plans to expand its telescope array, adding radio dishes in Chile, Europe, Mexico, Greenland and Antarctica, in order to obtain even more detailed pictures of black holes in the future.
Christopher Reynolds, a professor of astronomy at the University of Maryland, says the group's results provide the first observational data that will help scientists understand how a black hole's jets behave.
"The basic nature of jets is still mysterious," Reynolds says. "Many astrophysicists suspect that jets are powered by black hole spin ... but right now, these ideas are still entirely in the realm of theory. This measurement is the first step in putting these ideas on a firm observational basis."

BEIJING/TOKYO (Reuters) - China claimed islands at the core of a row with Japan as its "sacred territory" in talks between the two countries' foreign ministers, Xinhua news agency said on Wednesday, as neither side showed any sign of backing down in a long-festering feud.
Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba urged China to exercise restraint at what he called a tense hour-long meeting over the dispute, which triggered violent anti-Japanese protests in China this month and is threatening ties between Asia's two biggest economies, Japan's Kyodo news agency said.
Xinhua said Yang reiterated China's "solemn position on the issue of Diaoyu Islands, which have been China's sacred territory since ancient times".
Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Osamu Fujimura told a news conference in Tokyo the two sides had agreed to keep talking.
"There is no magic bullet in foreign diplomacy. We need to hold talks through various channels taking into account of broad perspective," Fujimura told a news conference in Tokyo.
Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply this month after Japan's central government bought the isolated East China Sea islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, from their private owner, sparking the anti-Japan protests across China.
In a sign of the economic fallout, Japanese automakers Toyota Motor Corp, Nissan Motor Co Ltd and Suzuki
China's meetings with Japanese diplomats - at the United Nations and a day earlier in Beijing - suggest Beijing does not want tensions over the island chain, believed to be in waters rich in natural gas deposits, to lead to a rupture in relations.
But the unyielding tone of China's published remarks suggests that the row is far from over. Beijing has repeatedly called the islands its "sacred territory since ancient times".
"The Japanese move is a gross violation of China's territorial integrity and sovereignty, an outright denial of the outcomes of victory of the world anti-fascist war and a grave challenge to the post-war international order," said Yang, according to the Xinhua summary of his comments.
DOMESTIC DYNAMICS
Sino-Japanese ties have long been plagued by China's bitter memories of Tokyo's military aggression in the 1930s and 1940s as well as present rivalry over regional resources and clout.
The row coincides with a once-in-a-decade leadership change in China, while Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's ruling party faces a drubbing in an election expected in months, domestic dynamics that are make it hard for either side to retreat.
Noda is under fire from the main opposition party, which picks a new leader and possible next premier later on Wednesday.
Japan, which says the islands' purchase was meant to fend off a more provocative bid by the nationalist governor of Tokyo, Shintaro Ishihara, to have his metropolitan government buy them, is trying to keep communications channels open.
China postponed a ceremony marking the 40th anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic ties with Japan, but an official at the Japan-China Economic Association said Toyota Motor Corp Chairman Fujio Cho and Hiromasa Yonekura, chairman of Japanese business lobby Keidanren, and other representatives of Japan-China friendship groups would attend an event on Thursday in Beijing.
Patrol vessels from the two countries have also been playing a tense game of cat-and-mouse in the waters near the disputed islands, raising concerns that an unintended collision or other incident could escalate into a broader clash.

The folks at the NFL and Microsoft, which makes the video system central to this initiative, are offering incentives such as gift cards for merchandise and personalized autographs on Facebook to youngsters who join up.
Because the entire body is the controller through Kinect for Xbox 360, the amount of exercise a player gets easily dwarfs the more conventional approaches for video games in which the fingers and the wrists get the biggest workouts.
?This is something I am very enthusiastic about,? said Dr. Bill Crounse, a family physician and now Microsoft?s senior director or worldwide health. ?Since I started as a physician in the early 1980s, we have seen about a tripling of the number of kids overweight or of childhood obesity ? and it has to do with inactivity. I reflect back to when I was growing up and kids were always running around. This is a way of getting kids and their families more motivated to get active.?
More than 1,500 PLAY 60 youth events have been organized and the league has built more than 100 youth fitness zones. But that touches only a small segment of the population compared to what this program can attract.

He seriously emphasizes its importance in his development as one of the best players the NFL has seen.
?It?s a 2.5-mile uphill run,? the 49-year-old?Rice?said. ?The training I used to do in the offseason helped make me the great player that I was. I always wanted to be in the best possible shape so that I had that extra edge when it was late in the game and other players were getting tired.?
Crounse recognizes that simply getting youngsters involved in the program won?t guarantee they will lose weight. They need to do more, including having healthy diets.
Even an hour?s more activity per day, though, is an important gain.
?As a physician, we know being overweight and obesity is associated with a lot of chronic diseases that are major causes of death in the United States,? Crounse said. ?We also know you don?t have to be doing anything real fancy to get more activity; even walking or dancing will burn those calories. The point being if each of us would do a little more of it a day, it could translate to a weight loss of a pound a week.
?So it?s not just getting kids enrolled in this program that will make kids lose that weight, but it can certainly help. And there?s a spirit of competitiveness with Xbox 360. People are very goal-oriented and this is a mechanism for the kids to do that, be competitive and active and healthier.?
State Sen. Joe Bolkcom, D-Iowa City, chair of the Ways and Means Committee says there?s no way Iowa should have dipped so deeply into its means to secure a fertilizer plant project in Lee County.
Iowa upped its potential state incentives package to Orascom Construction Industries to $110 million, along with $144 million in local tax breaks, to make sure the project didn?t go to Illinois, according to the governor. But Bolkcom contends that the company had already secured low-interest bonds through the Midwest Disaster Area Bonds program, bonds that could only be used at the Iowa site.
The bonds allow private companies to borrow at tax-exempt rates, Bolkcom said, meaning they save up to 2 percent on their borrowing costs. Assuming the bonds produce a net savings of $300 million to Orascom, he said, the corporation would receive a total of nearly $550 million in taxpayer subsidies from federal, state and local governments.
?This is the worst economic development deal in state history,? said Bolkcom, chairman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee, who calculated that the 165 permanent jobs that will be created in Lee County would cost about $3.3 million per job in taxpayer subsidies.
?Illinois could never compete with the federal subsidies worth as much as $300 million that Orascom Construction Industries would gain for siting the plant in Lee County, a federally declared flood disaster area,? the Iowa City Democrat contended.
Gov. Terry Branstad?s office disagrees:
Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht refuted Bolkcom?s claims, saying the state needed to provide up to $110 million in tax credits to sway the company to bring 165 permanent jobs and hundreds of construction jobs and other benefits to Iowa rather than seeing the project end up in Illinois.
?Gov. Branstad won?t apologize for fighting for every single job that he can bring to the state,? he said.
?These incentives did need to be there in order for Iowa to compete for this lucrative project,? Albrecht added. ?We simply weren?t going to turn our backs of the people of southeast Iowa who have a higher unemployment rate than the rest of the state, and we were going to fight for those jobs. Gov. Branstad came to the table and fought for those jobs and was successful.?
Here?s More about the Midwest Disaster Area Bonds, a federal program administered by the Iowa Finance Authority:
The Heartland Disaster Tax Relief Act (HDTRA) of 2008 provides assistance to areas in the Midwest that suffered severe storms, tornadoes and flooding in the spring and summer of 2008. One of the provisions of HDTRA is the creation of Midwestern Disaster Area (MDA) bonds.
Benefits
MDA bonds are a new kind of private activity tax-exempt bond designed to facilitate the economic recovery and rebuilding of areas damaged by the severe weather. The bonds are issued on a conduit basis; that is, the borrower (business) is responsible for repaying the debt. Rates and terms will be dependent on the credit-worthiness of the borrower. Iowa was provided $2.6 billion in bonding authority for MDA bonds.
Qualification
To qualify, the business or trade must have suffered a loss attributable to the severe storms, tornadoes or flooding or, the business must be replacing a business or trade that suffered a loss. Because Iowa lost so many businesses from the storms, tornados and flooding, most businesses locating, expanding or improving facilities in Iowa can be considered replacing a business that suffered a loss.
The loss and the project financed with the MDA bonds must be located in any one or more of the 78 Iowa counties declared a major disaster area by the President as part of disaster number FEMA 1763-DR declared on May 27, 2008. In Iowa, all counties except Buena Vista, Calhoun, Carroll, Cherokee, Clay, Dickinson, Emmet, Ida, Jefferson, Lyon, O?Brien, Osceola, Palo Alto, Plymouth, Pocahontas, Sac, Shelby, Sioux, Taylor, Wayne, and Woodbury are included. A total of 78 counties throughout Iowa are eligible.
Bolkcom?s point is that the bond program was a big advantage for Iowa over Illinois, big enough that a large pile of additional tax breaks wan?t necessary to land the project. It?s an issue worth raising.
Earlier this month, Illinois development officials insisted that they?had not put a bid on the table for Orascom. Could be sour grapes from Illini losers, as Branstad suggested. Could be we overbid. Could be both.
Bolkcom and Branstad are politicians, so there?s always going to be a certain amount of spin. But I think this episode should open up a couple of important covnersations.
One, as Branstad suggests, on our corporate tax structure and whether it can be improved in such a way that makes company-by-company giveaways unnecessary.
Two, as Bolkcom suggests, a discussion on how much authority appointed economic development officials should have to hand out incentives of this magnitude, and whether elected legislators should be involved.

Scripps study in Military Medicine reveals reduced depression, cynicism among US Marines
SAN DIEGO (Sept. 24, 2012) Healing touch combined with guided imagery (HT+GI) provides significant clinical reductions in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms for combat-exposed active duty military, according to a study released in the September issue of Military Medicine.
The report finds that patients receiving these complementary medicine interventions showed significant improvement in quality of life, as well as reduced depression and cynicism, compared to soldiers receiving treatment as usual alone.
The study, led by the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine in San Diego, Calif., conducted a randomized controlled trial of returning active-duty Marines at Camp Pendleton, Calif. from July 2008 to August 2010. Participants were separated at random into two groups, one that received treatment as usual (TAU) for PTSD and another that received TAU as well as healing touch (HT), a practitioner-based treatment aimed at eliciting the participant's own healing response, with guided imagery (GI), a self-care therapy aimed at eliciting relaxation as well as enhancing trust and self-esteem.
Significant Improvements Reported
After six sessions within a three-week period with a Scripps practitioner, the HT+GI group reported a significant improvement in PTSD symptoms as a result of these combined complementary therapies.
The principal investigators and designers of the study are Dr. Mimi Guarneri and Rauni King, founders of the Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. The Samueli Institute of Alexandria,Va., conducted blind data analysis and authored the manuscript.
"Scores for PTSD symptoms decreased substantially, about 14 points and below the clinical cutoffs for PTSD," said Dr. Guarneri. "This indicates that the intervention was not just statistically significant, but actually decreased symptoms below the threshold for PTSD diagnosis. It made a large difference in reducing PTSD symptoms."
Study Criteria
The study included a total of 123 participants 55 who received TAU and 68 who received HT+GI and TAU. To be eligible for the trial, participants were screened to confirm that they were currently experiencing at least one of the following PTSD symptoms: re-experiencing of trauma via flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive thoughts, exaggerated emotional responses to trauma, emotional numbness, insomnia, irritability, exaggerated startle response, or avoidance of people or places that remind them of the trauma.
"Service members are seeking out non-drug complementary and integrative medicine as part of their overall care and approach to wellness," said Wayne B. Jonas, MD, president and chief executive officer of Samueli Institute. "This treatment pairs deep relaxation with a self-care approach that can be used at home .The results of this study underscore the need to make effective, non-stigmatizing treatments for PTSD available to all our service members."
Healing Touch and Guided Imagery
Healing touch is an energy-based, non-invasive treatment that restores and balances the human biofield to help decrease pain and promote healing. Healing touch is often used as an adjunct to surgery and other medical procedures to assist in pain reduction, decrease anxiety and elicit relaxation.
Guided imagery is a way of using the imagination to help a person, reduce stress, decrease pain and enhance overall well-being through visualization. For the purposes of this study, guided imagery was administered to the subjects through a recorded CD simultaneously with Healing Touch and then listed to independently by subjects at least once daily.
