Lufthansa cabin crew to strike from Friday in Frankfurt

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Lufthansa passengers face widespread flight disruption from Friday after cabin crew representatives said they would start a series of strikes over pay and cost-cutting measures at Germany's largest airline.

The UFO union, which represents around two-thirds of Lufthansa's 19,000 cabin crew, late on Thursday called on its members to strike from 0300 GMT to 1100 GMT on Friday in Frankfurt.

"UFO calls on its members within Lufthansa to participate in the strike in Frankfurt from 0500 to 1300 hours (local)," UFO said in an emailed statement.

Lufthansa plans to cancel 64 flights, or 25 percent of the flights during the duration of the strike, a spokesman said.

The strike would also lead to "unplanned delays", the company said in a statement on its website. The airline planned to operate a total of 840 flights on Friday.

Financial Times Deutschland had reported before cabin crew members were preparing to hold the strikes in Frankfurt and Munich, citing UFO sources. It said on its website the union was discussing whether the strikes would also include Berlin.

The strikes come as Lufthansa cuts jobs and implements a three-year cost-cutting program to boost margins and finance investment in planes in the face of a weakening economy, high fuel costs and increased competition from low-cost carriers.

Germany's leading airline, which operates around 1,850 flights daily mostly from Frankfurt and Munich, needs to generate more profit to pay for 17 billion euros ($21 billion) of more fuel-efficient aircraft on order.

Lufthansa and the UFO union have been negotiating for 13 months, with the union demanding a 5 percent pay rise and guarantees that Lufthansa will not outsource jobs and use more temporary workers, as it has already done in Berlin.

Talks broke down on Tuesday, and while Lufthansa has called for further negotiations, it maintains that cabin crew must contribute to the cost-cutting program.

"It may well be that this industrial action could continue for a very long time," UFO said on its website.

UFO said the first wave of strikes would cover certain airports, rather than nationwide action. It has previously mentioned Berlin, Frankfurt and Munich as likely candidates.

"We do not want to give Lufthansa the opportunity to prepare for the strike by getting replacement crews ready," UFO head Nicoley Baublies told Reuters.

Lufthansa has previously said it would seek to keep disruptions to a minimum by using cabin crew who were not part of the union and by drafting staff from other units.

A spokesman for the airline said it had several strategies to mitigate the impact of striking staff and would prioritize long-haul flights.

Lufthansa estimates a nationwide strike on a busy day would cost it millions of euros. Analysts have said costs could be kept to around 5 million euros a day if flight cancellations were kept to a few hundred.

Agape League Football Preview: Excelsior aims high again

VICTORVILLE ? The Excelsior football team is 18-7 the past two seasons and coming off back-to-back appearances in the CIF-Southern Section 8-man Division 1 championship game.

They lost their leading rusher from the last three seasons ? who racked up 6,450 yards and 720 points during that time ? as well as their leading receiver, their kicker and several other key pieces.

Time for a drop-off? Not quite.

Eagles head coach Bill Rivera said he believes this year?s team is better. The expectations just keep rising, or at least staying at the same extraordinarily high level, at Excelsior. The goal this season is to get back to the title game.

The Eagles are smaller this year, but what they lost in size they?ve gained in speed and depth.

?Last year we had a great eight,? Rivera said. ?There?s no doubt about it. But once we got past that eight, nine kids, there was a big drop-off. This year, we?ve got seriously 16 to 17 kids that can play.?

Despite losing leading rusher Joe Harrison, the Eagles still return senior Kyle Washington, who had 1,918 yards and scored 32 touchdowns of his own last season. Washington, who added about 15 pounds working out in the offseason, said he doesn?t worry about the added pressure with Harrison gone and has set a goal of running for 3,400 yards.

?I?ve gotten a lot faster and I?ve gotten a lot bigger,? Washington said. ?I just hope that I?m still as good and that my size won?t hold me back.?

He?ll be joined in the backfield with junior Matt Marable and senior Ejan O?Rea among others. Marable rushed for 173 yards and six touchdowns in limited varsity action last year, and Rivera said he gained 3,200 yards on junior varsity.

?I?m very confident with myself,? Marable said. ?I?m going to do what I was told to do, and I?m going to work my way up.?

The Eagles also return quarterback Darren Corbin, who completed 60 percent of his passes and averaged 21.8 yards per completion but threw the ball fewer than 70 all season times.

That could change this year.

Excelsior has been a double-wing team during Rivera?s five seasons as head coach and that has served them well. But they have the ability to do more this year. The Eagles have packages for wildcat and spread formations ready to go.

The additions of Obie Galindo, who was the head coach at Granite Hills last year, and Chris Fore, who coached previously at Capistrano Valley Christian and is the Eagles new athletic director, to the coaching staff and the Eagles? new-found athleticism has created an offense with a new flare for creativity.

?It?s fun to coach because you really don?t know what the possibilities are yet,? Rivera said. ?We have only just scratched the surface.

?You take an offense that has been run by me for so many years as a double-wing-type coach and then you add it to the best that Obie (Galindo) brings from Granite (Hills) and Victor (Valley Christian). Then you bring Chris Fore?s offense from Capo Valley. I guess you?d call it an Irish stew. Throw everything in there and see what happens.?

Senior lineman Lido Lynn, who?s getting some Division 1 looks and is making the switch to center, said at first he wasn?t so sure about the Eagles? offensive transition but has since been sold.

?It was kind of sketchy, but after seeing them and what they can do and how fast they are, I?d rather have a fast, strong team than just a big team,? Lynn said.

Lynn is listed at 6-6, 310 pounds and is easily Excelsior?s biggest player. If you can sell him on a speed game perhaps the possibilities are truly limitless.

Lucerne Valley
Facing declining student enrollment, Lucerne Valley had no choice but to make a move to 8-man football.

The Mustangs have struggled in recent seasons, and one of the key reasons is a lack of depth. After a few injuries or a few cases of academic ineligibility, the team had a hard time just putting a team on the field.

Last season, with only 17 active players on the roster, the Mustangs made the decision to join the Agape League.

?It?s a lot different, the field size, but the intensity?s the same,? said junior quarterback Daniel Stratton. ?It?s different how many people are on the field, obviously, but it?s quicker, it?s faster. There?s more open space. It?s more high-scoring.?

Lucerne Valley head coach Chris Klinger said the Mustangs now have no issues with turnout.

?Today we?re out here with 28 guys, which is perfect to have a varsity team and a (junior varsity) team, each with 14 or so guys,? Klinger said. ?So we?re not hurting in terms of having players out. And I think part of that is because of a little renewed pride and enthusiasm to do something new and different. We had success in our couple of 8-man games last year, so that?s also going to bring out a couple new guys.?

Victor Valley Christian
Victor Valley Christian has a football team again.

That?s something it couldn?t say toward the end of last season when injuries left the Royals so short handed that they had to forfeit the final three games. VVCS won one game last season, and that was due to a forfeit.

?It hurt,? senior running back/linebacker Caleb Rowling said. ?It doesn?t feel good wanting to play, and you can?t play games because everybody?s getting hurt from trying so hard on the field.?

What happened last year motivated those returning this season, and the players said the postseason is a goal for them.

?We did have a lot of injuries last year, but the guys that are returning actually got themselves into the weight room,? said head coach David Lindsay, who was the co-head coach last year with Mike Rainwater. ?They got a little more serious about their game. I don?t think we?re going to see the injuries we had last year.?

Six of the 15 players on the roster are freshmen. But Lindsay said most of them have played together on the junior high team since they were sixth graders.

?They know the program. They know what we?re doing and we will have a better season than we did last year,? Lindsay said.

Josh Bankston, the Royals? leading returning rusher from last season, will move from wide receiver/running back to the starting quarterback position. Working mainly out of an I-formation, Rowling ? the team?s second leading returning rusher ? is expected to get the majority of the carries with Ben Mettias starting at fullback. Freshman Reece Griffith is expected to rotate in and spot Rowling, and senior defensive lineman Kyle Wilson will also see some action in the backfield.

Judge sets Dec. 6 hearing on Apple's injunction vs. Samsung

SAN FRANCISCO?? A U.S. judge on Tuesday set a Dec. 6 court date to hear Apple's request for a permanent injunction against Samsung Electronics' smartphones, which could delay the potential impact of Apple's crushing legal victory.

Apple on Monday identified eight devices it will seek preliminary injunctions against, and said it would file for a permanent sales ban. A hearing had been scheduled for Sept. 20.

In an order on Tuesday, however, U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh said that due to the scope of Apple's preliminary injunction request, she believed it was "appropriate" that various post-trial motions be consolidated.

The Sept. 20 hearing will be devoted instead to Samsung's request to dissolve a sales ban against its Galaxy Tab 10.1. The jury sided with Samsung on that part of the case.

Apple's injunction request will be considered in December ? after attorneys file detailed legal arguments. Representatives for Apple and Samsung could not immediately be reached for comment.

Apple was awarded $1.05 billion in damages last week after a U.S. jury found Samsung had copied critical features of the iPhone and iPad.

The case in U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, is Apple Inc v. Samsung Electronics Co Ltd et al, No. 11-1846.

Wenzhou government puts up 52 sites for sales as revenue falls

In case you have not noticed, Wenzhou?s real estate prices did not quite rebound as in the rest of the country according to the official residential real estate prices.?

Not surprising perhaps, as the centre for the shadow banking mess and with large number of companies facing financial difficulties, with real estate speculators in the city getting squeezed by falling prices, the real estate market did not quite warm up (or perhaps not yet, who knows).

A cooling real estate market puts local government under pressure, predictably, as it has become a major source of revenue.? In a sign of desperation, the local government of Wenzhou put up 52 pieces of land for sales in a sort of big road show, with a total area of 3,220 mu according to First Financial Daily (1 mu = 666.66 sq. metre).? Publicly, government officials told real estate developers that this is a brilliant time to invest in real estate, and to tell everyone that ?look, we have a lot of land available, surely the real estate market is now very rational?.? Whatever.? Of all the sites being offered, 10 of them were reportedly sold on the day.

Those with knowledge of the local government?s financial situation, of course, points out that this is merely a sign of desperation.? Wenzhou?s land sales have fallen by 84% in the first half of the year compared to a year ago.? Tax revenue also slowed together with the economy.? As a result, Zhejiang Province (where Wenzhou is located) local government total revenue growth has slowed to 4.4% for the first half of the year compared to a year ago, much lower than the 20-30% growth rate in the previous year according to First Financial Daily.?

But beyond the financial consideration of the local governments, funny enough, First Financial Daily also noted that other local governments are also putting up more land for sales.? Perhaps some of them are once again betting on real estate investment to stabilise growth.? It is still about investment, after all.

Reality Robotics, the company behind the likes of the nerd-friendly, Android-controlled TankBot, is back with another gadget, this one a little more near and dear to our hearts. A Kickstarter campaign has been launched for BERO -- Be The Robot. 

There are a number of models of the 4-inch BugDroids from which to choose. They've got tracks for legs, LEDs for eyes, and the headphones pulse to music. Plus there's a built-in speaker that will play music from an included storage card. Very cool.

The different models will behave different. They're programmable, voice-activated -- and the whole thing is open-sourced. (Jerry is going nuts already, we imagine.)

There are a dozen Kickstarter pledge levels, starting at $35 for a paperweight (basically the shell of a BERO with no electronics), all the way up to a $7,800 pledge that will send you to Hong Kong to see how these little guys are made. (There are only two of those available.)

Correa expressed relief at receiving assurances from London on Thursday that ruled out the possibility of British authorities forcibly entering his country's embassy.

Britain's permanent observer to the OAS, Philip Barton, echoed London's statement that it never threatened to enter the Ecuadoran embassy.

"At no time did the UK make any threat against the embassy of Ecuador," he said, calling for a resumption of dialogue.

"We invite the government of Ecuador to resume as early as possible the constructive discussion we've held on this matter to date."

Speaking to the British newspaper The Guardian, Correa insisted that "the window of dialogue has never been closed."

"But we are never going to give up our principles, nor the human rights of Mr Assange," he added.

"As a consequence, we'll continue to demand what we've been demanding from the beginning: if Mr Assange goes to Sweden to face Swedish justice, as is his will and as is our will, he should receive a guarantee that he will not be extradited to a third country."

Correa repeated his demand that London grant Assange "safe passage" to exit the embassy.

Assange took refuge there to escape extradition to Sweden, where he is sought for questioning about sex assault allegations.

He claims that if extradited to Sweden, he would be handed over to the United States, where he fears prosecution over WikiLeaks' release of a vast cache of confidential US government files.

Ecuador is demanding a "public apology" from Britain for allegedly threatening to enter the Ecuadoran embassy in London to arrest Assange.

During the OAS debate, Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino condemned Britain for what he called the "assault on our sovereignty."

While Britain has said it will not go into the embassy to arrest Assange, it has refused to grant the Australian national safe conduct out of the country.

More than 300,000 new cases of breast, cervical, uterine, and ovarian cancer are diagnosed each year, according to the National Cancer Institute. While the incidence and prevalence of these cancers are widespread, disparities in prevention, early treatment, quality of care, and outcomes result in a higher prevalence and mortality rates among minority and underserved women.

?This app challenge is an example of our work to reduce health disparities, building on the HHS Action Plan to Reduce Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities,? said J. Nadine Gracia, M.D., M.S.C.E., acting deputy assistant secretary for minority health. ?By providing the right information at the right time, mobile apps can help minority and underserved women make informed decisions about their own health and benefit from the recommended preventive services provided at no cost under the health care law.?

The challenge being issued today is a multidisciplinary call to software application innovators and developers to create an app that provides information directly to women at a high risk of breast, cervical, uterine and ovarian cancers or women who already have been diagnosed with these cancers. The app must be able to communicate with electronic health records used by their health care providers and other members of their health care teams, and protect patient privacy.

The winning app will:

• Provide users with general, accessible information about preventive and screening services for breast and gynecologic cancers ? in different languages and in culturally appropriate contexts;
• Communicate with patient health records or provider-sponsored patient portals in a secure way that protects patient privacy and that will provide specific reminders and trigger electronic health record-based clinical decision support about preventive services;
• Support the secure storage, viewing, and the exchange of complex patient care plans in a way that protects patient privacy while strengthening communications between a patient?s care team that may be located across a large geographic area, such as a local clinician being able to work with a regional cancer center in a major metropolitan area; and
• Support patient engagement and caregiver support by helping patients and their caregivers keep track of complex care plans with a particular emphasis on connections to community health workers, such as promotores de salud.

The Reducing Cancer Among Women of Color App Challenge is a partnership between ONC and the HHS Office of Minority Health.
